- The Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) has prepared the National Energy Policy, which sets the targets up 2017 (Rwanda – Energy Sector Opportunities.pdf).
- This strategy sets to generate 1,000 MWe from both the indigenous energy resources and from shared energy resources with neighboring countries.
- These are the following:
- Hydropower generation to be increased to about 333 MWe, which is including the shared cross border plant
- Peat Power plants in the capacity of 200 MWe
- Geothermal power plants with capacity of 310 MWe to be developed
- Methane gas to power projects will deliver 300 MWe to the national grid
- 20 MW of additional diesel generation required for immediate power needs and serve as a back-up
- However, the overall capacities are estimated in geothermal and biomass even higher, setting the theoretical capacity to 700 and 1200 MWe respectively;
- About 30 hydro sites have been investigated to different levels, which are offered for investment;
