• The Ministry for Energy and Mines set the sector’s strategy up to 2020 (Investment opportunities in renewable energy Burundi.pdf);
  • The minimum target is 280 MWe total capacity, which is more than 5 times the current level;
  • In the case of the expected large mining developments of the nickel ores, the demand could increase this number to 1.000 MWe;
  • The priority technology is still the hydro, which has 1,700 MWe theoretical capacities according to scientific researches. The number of the estimated suitable sites is 156, of which 35 has been studied to different levels. These opportunities are calculating with 900 MWe targeted capacity.
  • There are cross border large hydro plants, which are aiming the utilization of the RuziziRiver and the power shall be distributed between DRC, Rwanda and Burundi.
  • The rest of the Hydro plants are in small and medium scale category;
  • Burundi has large volume of Peat, in the estimated volume of 600 million tons, which should introduce a special technology (circular fluidized bed), which is closed to poor quality coal burning. This could support several 100s of MWe capacities.
